Log a breeding
2 minute readFree planUpdated September 2026
Record the mating date, sire, and method on your dog’s heat cycle in BreedTracker. The heat record shows an estimated whelping date and offers to create a litter.
In this stage
Why it matters
- No counting 63 days on a calendar. The expected whelp date appears the moment you save the breeding.
- The breeding stays on the female’s record with the sire, the date, and the method. Next season you can see what you did.
- The litter is one click away. BreedTracker fills in the dam, the heat, and the whelp date.
Before you start
Log the breeding
- Open Heats (in the left menu, or under More on a phone) and select the female’s current heat.
- Select Log breeding, at the top of the page beside Log progesterone.

- Enter the Breeding Date. It defaults to today, and it cannot be a future date.
- Choose an Insemination Technique: Natural Tie, Vaginal AI, TCI, or Surgical AI.
- Choose a Semen Type: Fresh, Fresh-Chilled, or Frozen. Natural Tie fills in Fresh for you.
- Choose the Sire from your studs. At the bottom of the list, Add outside stud asks for a name and an optional registration number.
- Add Notes if you want them, then select Log breeding.
The female’s own page carries the same Log breeding button while the heat is open. It opens this dialog on the current heat.
Find the estimated whelping date
The moment the breeding is saved, a green Ready to create a litter? box appears on the heat.

The box shows how many breedings are recorded and gives the expected whelp date. That date is 63 days after the first breeding on the heat. You can log more than one breeding on the same heat. Each one appears under Breeding Events, with edit and delete in the row menu. The green box stays until you create the litter or confirm the female is not pregnant.
Create a litter from the breeding
- In the green box, select Create litter.
- The new litter form opens with the dam, this heat, and the expected whelp date already filled in.
The offer and expected whelp date stay on the heat record until you create the litter. Once the litter exists, your dashboard flags Whelping imminent when the date is seven days out or less.
The dam’s page keeps a conception record. Each breeding is listed with its semen type and method, and whether it took. The technique and semen type you record here are what it shows.
